Charro Portraits | Jason

When my friend Alex asked me if I would photograph her son for his upcoming birthday I, of course, was excited but when I found out I would be doing charro portraits my level of excitement turned to a whole new level. Alex told me over and over again that “it’s not a big deal,” but clearly it was. It’s not every day you see someone in a traditional charro outfit that you can direct to your heart and camera’s content. I started looking up pictures of Vicente Fernandez and imagining I was working on his next album cover….and no, it doesn’t matter if he’s going to retire. Chente always needs cover albums! And if you don’t know who he is, you really should. Really.

So back to the story. Initially, we scheduled for a week earlier which just happened to be the weekend where we hit over 100 degrees. So we rescheduled, to Jason’s relief for the following weekend when we were back down to our 70’s.  (Portland weather, really).

Perfect for the charro portrait session of my dreams.Portland Charro Portraits | Susie Moreno PhotographyTo my happy surprise, Jason was completely at ease in front of the camera which is a rare find in young men his age. Apparently he knew he had the charro portraits down to an art form. Seriously though, I kinda love these portraits.Portland Charro Portraits | Susie Moreno PhotographyCool & collected and struttin’ that charro outfit like it ain’t nothin’. Portland Charro Portraits | Susie Moreno PhotographyPortland Charro Portraits | Susie Moreno PhotographyDid I mention that his mom bought this charro outfit directly from Mexico without seeing it in person? I mean, one odd size and this session could have never happened. Literally, this charro session was meant to be!Portland Charro Portraits | Susie Moreno PhotographyAnd then I found a little wooden shack that was perfectly in the shade.  And then Jason gave me his strongest model pose.  Touche.Portland Charro Portraits | Susie Moreno PhotographyYou can’t even imagine how much I love these charro portraits in black and white.

So to end this blog I want to give a big thanks to Alex for thinking of me to photograph Jason’s awesome charro portraits for his upcoming birthday. And Jason, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! It was so much fun photographing something so unique and amazing!  If anyone else has any charro photography needs, let a girl know. I’m most definitely down for another awesome session!
